jbe, hello

This has been a cause of concern for a number of years now. The story you posted is rather alarmist in nature, I think. It is possible to isolate systems and subsystems in order to test their robustness when confronted with the Y2K scenario - otherwise, how would we perform routine maintenance?.

The company I'm with has made it a front-line issue and assigned responsibility - pretty well defined, hard-edged responsibility - from the top down in the management chain. From my side, as a driller, this means that, for example, every contract we sign for each every service has a Y2K appendix in it which requires the proposed contractor to (a) take responsibility for the Y2K problem as it applies to his equipment & services and (b) detail the contractor's actions to achieve this compliance.

We are already in the process of shutting things down, setting the clock ahead, and going through 1 Jan '01 arificially to see what happens. I would imagine that others are jumping through hoops to do the same.

By the way - I read an interesting article in the Asian WSJ about this problem. The experience of the researchers profiled is that Y2K seizures will most likely not be confined to midnight, New years. Some of the systems may not torque up until 2001 or later.

Good luck to all,

Don't sell those carrier pigeons.

Aggie

jbe, I asked my local electric company whether they were Y2K ready
and they sent me some reports to read. After reading them I'm not worried here in Silicon Valley. Y2K doesn't exactly come as a
surprise to them.

I suggest you do the same and write to your electric company, or
any other company you're concerned about.
