Weld was from the currently invisible Libertarian wing of the party. Like old conservative patron saint Barry Goldwater, who got in trouble with the RR at the end because he didn't think gays were perverts and an affront to the almighty. Weld of late had his bit of trouble with the RR too, in the form of Jesse Helms.

Yes, he was the moderate Republican from Massachusetts, don't you remember? He ran for Senate against John Kerry (in 1996) but lost. Clinton wanted to make him ambassador to Mexico but Jesse Helms blocked it.
