RE : Craig & k7 to alpha upgrade path

Dont get me wrong, I hoped to that the alpha would be a good and working upgrade solution for the K7, but I have heard rumours and some less vague articles who said it might not be possible to support both cpu's in the same (basic) chipset. I understood the North Bridge is quite a bit different, and a little more than just a bios upgrade would be needed to support alpha.

I hope it is possible, but haven't seen any confirmation *yet*.

Re: "Considering that Intel won't get above 600 MHz and they won't have anything comparable to the Alpha bus in '99, maybe I should reverse the question."

Intel has already stated they will be shipping MOBILE processors that run above 600 mhz in '99. As for the Alpha bus, no one has presented a convincing case here for why it is better. Perhaps you could tell us.

Craig,

Re: "Yousef, would you consider a 1 GHz Alpha chip to be a worthy competitor
to Intel in the high-margin server marketplace?"

A couple of questions, Craig ... When will this 1 Ghz Alpha chip be available
AND who do you think will be manufacturing this CPU ?? BTW Craig, Sun,
HWP, Alpha are the major server vendors (both x86 and UNIX) and x86 servers
are increasing market share at the expense of UNIX. I really expect Intel
CPU's to continue to gain server market share in '99.

Make It So,
