Not so much to do with WSTL (which has held up far better than I could have hoped for so far), but interesting nontheless.

BC TELECOM Selects and Deploys Newbridge Networks and 3Com ADSL Access
Solutions
KANATA, ONTARIO--Solutions Chosen Based on Superior Performance,
Manageability and Support for Value-Added Services
Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN; TSE: NNC) and 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS)
today announced that BC TELECOM has selected and deployed both companies'
comprehensive Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) solutions for its ADSL
services.
The Newbridge(r) solution was selected following a comprehensive
competitive review process, winning out over all major DSL equipment providers.
Newbridge was selected because of its product's superior performance,
manageability and support for value-added services, integrating high-density
ADSL line cards into the industry leading Siemens/Newbridge
MainStreetXpress(tm) 36170 Multiservices Switch. The switch offers BC TELECOM
unparalleled scalability and standards compliance, enabling the Newbridge ADSL
solution to interoperate with products from leading modem and router vendors,
such as 3Com. To support value-added services over ADSL, the Newbridge solution
provides a service subscription management application and flexibly partitions
management functions to network services providers and content providers,
including Internet service providers (ISPs).
"We're excited to have the support of market leaders Newbridge Networks and
3Com to help us provide our customers with flexible, high-quality solutions,"
said Dave Boroevich, Assistant Vice President of Marketing, BC TEL Advanced
Communications.
BC TELECOM also selected the Newbridge solution for its
MainStreetXpress(tm) Service Subscription Manager, which provides dynamic user
service selection management software as well as network and service management
software. The Newbridge service subscription management software and ADSL
products enable customers to dynamically select content provider services and
operate with a flexible management model where activities, such as
provisioning, billing and line maintenance, can be partially or fully
partitioned to meet user demand.
The Newbridge ADSL solution, launched in May 1998, is highly integrated and
uses the latest in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) and discrete multi-tone
(DMT) silicon technology. Today, more than 25 service providers throughout the
world are deploying the standards-compliant ADSL solution from Newbridge.
"Newbridge is delivering much more than an ADSL transport system," said
Conrad Lewis, Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President, Access
Products Group, Newbridge Networks. "We are delivering a powerful, integrated
system that opens additional revenue streams for service providers, a solution
that is highly affordable from a total cost of ownership perspective."
3Com's OfficeConnect(r) remote ADSL router, which is interoperable with the
Newbridge ADSL solution, provides all the necessary components to deliver
rapid, cost-effective access to the Internet or corporate networks in one
affordable package. The router is equipped with full routing and bridging
capabilities, a built-in four-port Ethernet hub and all the functionality
necessary to manage its multiple users. It is designed to meet the specific
needs of remote office/branch office (ROBO) and small office/home office (SOHO)
users.
In the future, 3Com plans to support BC TELECOM ADSL services by making the
U.S. Robotics peripheral connection interface (PCI) ADSL modem and U.S.
Robotics universal serial bus (USB) ADSL modems available through select
channel partners to meet customers needs.
"3Com's wide selection of ADSL consumer modems and business routers are
easy to use, aggressively priced and feature-rich to help connect users and
provide the most satisfying customer experience," said Al Brisard, Director of
Marketing and Business Development for 3Com's xDSL group. "We are pleased to
work with Newbridge and BC TELECOM to enable high-speed Internet and corporate
network access using our channel expertise."
