So, you are saying that the real right-wing nutcases have taken over only now???? Well, electorally speaking, that's good news... for the Democrats!

In fact, the main reason many Republicans wanted him out as House Speaker was his willingness to compromise with Bill Clinton. Many Republicans were furious with the Budget Compromise that Gingrich forged with Clinton.

Maybe, maybe not. As I've said, at least Newt had the good grace not to blame his fall on the stupid voters. Then, there's this little piece, from when I first heard of the Livingston uprising.

One conservative leader said that he and his allies had reservations about Livingston because he was "obsessed" about trying to keep social issues out of the budget process. The budget, he said, "has been a vehicle for conservatives over the years to add restrictions on federal money for abortion and other things you can't get through the Senate or past a presidential veto. If Livingston is the challenger, I doubt that will cause a rallying of the real conservatives in Congress." (http://www2.techstocks.com/~wsapi/investor/reply-6318893)

Republicans can go to the wall instead of compromising if they want. Another government shutdown in the Presidential election runup would seem to be ill considered, but Livingston might do a better job than Newt did. Or, he might fall victim to the moral reformation hotheads regardless of his personal views. We'll see.

Cheers, Dan.
