Siemens is about to sell U.K. fab
By Jack Robertson

WASHINGTON -- Siemens Semiconductor group is close to selling a major interest in its U.K. DRAM fab, a deal that company president Ulrich Schmacher told SBN at Electronica '98 last month, in Munich, was in the works.

Schumacher said at the time that Siemens was in serious talks with at least two parties: one a chip maker and the other an investment group. A report in the British press this week claimed the new partner is a telecommunications company from China that will join Siemens in the fab to make chips for GSM wireless phone handsets.

A Siemens representative in the United States declined to comment, citing corporate policy to make no response on reported investment deals.

The $1 billion Siemens fab in North Tynside, England, is a state-of-the-art 0.25-micron facility that has been slated to close at the end of this month. In operation for only a year, the fab makes 16-megabit DRAMs. Siemens Semiconductors lost $700 million in its last fiscal year due largely to crashing DRAM prices, and the firm elected to cut capacity by shuttering the U.K. plant.

William,
Yes, OEM prices went up on Dec 1.
Hopefully someone at micron will mention prices in their next interview or report. The spot while I havent checked today has trended up $.10 last week, If I check AICE I will post.
The key is the Spot is stabile, and OEM is continuing to move closer to it. However, MU stock price has proven at least in the past it doesnt follow DRAM price directly.
Good trading.
