Dan, res- <<You don't know what you're talking about. My daughter in second grade, who's learned to read with a modern, eclectic approach, does very well at reading. I don't know if it's better than I could do at that age, with the old Catholic school Dick-and-Jane reader, but I know she reads a lot more interesting stuff than I did in school, and I imagine she'd be bored to death if she had to plow through Dick and Jane and endless phonics drills. She learned some phonics, but mostly she learned to read by reading a lot, and by being read to, like we all learn to talk.>>> My son can pick up an ordinary paper and read it. He just turned five. There have been huge studies done on this issue. For most kids phonics works far better than whole language. I suggest you educate yourself here Dan. I didn't think you could name one teenager who has died form smoking related illnesses. Guess what, I bet I can find thousands who have died from drinking and driving, aids or drugs. Now please tell me which is the greatest threat to teenagers health? Cigarettes?? or drugs, and violence? It's not even debatable. res-<<<But you really want to understand, right? Substantive debate as usual. K would be proud. Then, you get to throw in the ever popular mental health thing. Since I don't find all the smears and attacks on the "wrong" politics funny, despite your smileys, I'm hostile and unbalanced.>>> Unbalanced?? I wouldn't want to comment on that Dan. Although I would be hard pressed to argue with you. :-) Do you always see a political disagreement as some sort of attack on you Dan? I suppose you would rather live in the former Moscow or Cuba where political discourse is against the law huh. :-) I understand though, it's difficult defending a liberal ideology. That's the main reason why talk radio is almost exclusively conservative. :-) The paradigm has shifted Dan. News and political discussions are no longer controlled by the liberal elite. The net as well as the popularity of radio have opened up a whole new voice from the people. Michael
