C-Cube Launches New AViA Chip

C-Cube Microsystems [CUBE] is shifting its set-top strategy into high gear with today's introduction of its next generation AViA chipset, AViA@TV.

Since the Milpitas, Calif., company introduced its first generation AViA set-top chip a year and a half ago, it has been integrated into boxes from Zenith, JVC, Sharp and NEC. Those companies also are looking at the new version, which already has won endorsements from CANAL+, Sony [SNE], Pace and Pioneer [PIO].

The new chip packs 20 times the processing speed of the previous generation of AViA with added graphics capabilities and a "flicker filter" feature that improves the picture quality of HTML over television screens. It also provides two-way cable networking that allows subscribers to access data services such as email and home banking.

While the majority of cable systems have yet to see much revenue from interactive services through digital set-tops, Brian Johnson, C- Cube's VP, advanced development predicts that over the next four years, up to 10 percent of the revenues will be derived from interactive services, depending on the number of digital boxes deployed.

The chip's endorsement from Pioneer and CANAL+, one of Europe's largest digital set-top box makers, is a direct result of an August agreement between the three companies and C-Cube's subsidiary, DiviCom . (DVB, 9.7.98)

The chip now is being sampled, with availability in January. Expect to see the first deployment of set-tops with the integrated chip in Q2, 1999, with Europe's Pace among the first on the market.

C-Cube's latest AViA chip faces competition from VM Labs' Nuon chip, formerly "Project X," (DVB, 6.15.98). Toshiba plans to integrate Nuon in its set-tops and Motorola's [MOT] new Blackbird set-top also is using the chip.

Companies developing middleware for the chip include OpenTV, Canal+'s MediaHighway, PowerTV and NCI.
