If DRAM ceases to be a viable fab-fill, it's hard for me to see how companies like Sanyo, Panasonic, Casio can build their own products in their own fabs. e.g. can Sony really expect to build a $2B 0.12um fab in two years and manufacture their own chips? They can retain their own in-house semi design expertise and farm out manufacturing, or they can just turn into marketing houses and buy customized chips from companies like LSI. I bet you in the long run, the second model will win out.

O~~~o Ooooo, Great Post!..with your permission, I'll pass it around. In a similar vein, about two weeks ago, Rob, on the DPMI thread posted one which indicated that there could well be a shortage of photomasks in the near future....especially for the .25 micron (and lower, when feasible, I presume)...
