Ascend targets Net voice
By ADRIAN LYNCH

1dec98

ASCEND Communications has introduced to the Australian and Asian markets a new product for voice over Internet Protocol networking.

Spokesman Joe Roissier said there were three components to Ascend's IP voice-fax offering: Max – the storage and forwarding of fax server support; core network replacement; and PC, phone and fax support.

For voice traffic, the solution used international standard-based technology to encode voice into IP packets, he said.

It could also carry IP voice traffic over Ethernet and Frame Relay-based networks.

Mr Roissier said the Ascend solution allowed a single data network to provide both data and voice-based services.

It also had a billing feature that scaled with network usage, and allowed for new network service revenues for non-traditional services, he said.

The launch follows a spate of announcements from local telecoms carriers and service providers planning to introduce VoIP networks in response to strong corporate demand for company-wide, low-cost integrated voice and data communications solutions.

Ascend spokesman Peter Pryor said the launch was prompted by increasing convergence of voice and data services in the service provider market, the dramatic growth in wide-area network data traffic, and the highly competitive market for voice and data telecom services.

"The rate of growth in data traffic is exponential," he said.

"The amount of data transmitted exceeds that of voice."

Mr Roissier said the aim was to provide "a strategic architecture that provides a totally integrated solution for service providers".

The strategy included transparent integration of existing voice networks with voice and fax-over-IP, Frame Relay and ATM packet networks.

"Such transparency will allow service providers to provide managed, toll-quality, carrier-class voice and fax services over existing or future data networks," Mr Roissier said.

He said the demand for VoIP traffic was insatiable, and that next year, 60 million PC users would be making voice calls over the Internet.

By 2001, Internet telephony would account for 12.5 billion minutes of use, and the following year 25 per cent of all calls would be Internet-borne.

Pushing VoIP growth would be increasing congestion on traditional voice networks, and the consolidation of telecoms and Internet service providers (ISPs) which were now offering similar services.

"Migration to the new public network will be driven by ISPs, which are early adopters of new technology, aggressive and entrepreneurial; information technology managers who need to cut costs; and business users who drive multiple applications and services," he said.

"Quality services will enable networks to make intelligent choices on how to prioritise different types of traffic.

"In five years, packet-based networks will carry 10 times their current level of traffic.

"In 10 years, networks will have entirely switched from the circuit-switched to the packet-switched model."
