More Devastating News For SRCM...

The GIC 5000 boxes being show at Western Cable Show have telephony, IP internet access and other kewl features - ouch!!! Looks like more cable companies will wait to order the new 5000 series boxes that won't use or need anything from SRCM, rather than ordering the 2000 series box.

General Instrument Introduces Its IP Telephony Solution at Western Cable Show '98

Its IP Telephony Solution at Western Cable Show '98

Live Theater Production Demonstrates How an MSO Can Offer New Services
And Attract New Types of Subscribers Using Advanced Two-Way HFC Networks

ANAHEIM, Calif., Nov. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- General Instrument is introducing its seamless, end-to-end Internet Protocol (IP) Telephony solution, which will enable operators to offer advanced data, voice and video services all over the HFC network. GI is offering a live theater production and product demonstrations at the Western Cable Show (December 2-4) at its Booth #111 to highlight the benefits of this offering.

The production, entitled "A New World Is Taking Shape," will provide
Multiple System Operators (MSOs) with a first-hand look at the new world of advanced technology, broadband services, and increased revenues made possible by GI's IP Telephony technology. This presentation will show MSOs how, by utilizing GI's new IP Telephony products, they can offer new services to grow their subscriber base to include the following new and existing subscriber markets: small office/home office, high-end digital entertainment, and residential telephony.

At the end of the presentation, a random audience member will be invited to place a live long-distance telephone call over the HFC network. This phone call will be placed from a telephone connected to GI's DCT-5000+ advanced digital interactive consumer terminal. The analog telephone signal will be converted to digital packets, which will pass through the embedded cable modem and travel over the HFC cable and through the Cisco Universal Broadband Router (uBR).

The signal will then travel through a gateway and out onto the public
switch telephone network. GI's IP Telephony solution integrates GI's DCT-5000+ advanced interactive digital set-top terminal, Advanced IP Telephony cable modem and Broadband Telephony Interface (BTI) solutions into one system to offer a more cost-effective alternative to traditional circuit-switched telephony systems. The IP Telephony solution also utilizes Cisco's uBR, a cost-effective, scalable
interface between subscriber cable modems and the backbone data network. This unique Internet gateway will enable consumers to simultaneously watch television, surf the World Wide Web, and talk on the phone.

To present this total IP telephony solution, GI will include Cisco's uBR in its Booth #111. In addition, Cisco Systems will display GI's DCT-5000+ terminal in its Booth #2101.

General Instrument Corporation (NYSE: GIC) is a leading worldwide provider of integrated and interactive broadband access solutions, teaming with its business partners to lead the convergence of the Internet, telecommunications and video entertainment industries.
