Good article, Chris. Thanks.

...EMC expects software revenue to double in 1998, to $400 million. To continue this growth, it is investing $1 billion in software research over the next three years, with 800 of its 1,200 engineering staff now in application development....

EMC's continued success in software only serves to increase the technology lead that the Symmetrix platform already enjoys. It's getting tougher and tougher for anybody who sells the server to get the storage sale as well. A case in point: SUN. Sun has, arguably, the hottest UNIX box out there -- Starfire -- but EMC sells 1 out of every 2 storage subsystems sold with Starfire despite all the money SUN has invested in enterprise storage.
