Something struck me in this link:

voodoomag.com

in the Voodoo Review section under Nov 29th issue.

The author was reminiscing about what he wrote about two years
before. Here is one of his bullets.

"Worrying that the "Rendition" card would become the 3D standard over Voodoo ("Hey, it's not as fast but it LOOKS better..." sound
familiar?) "

This keeps ringing through my head, especially appropos of what
Chip has been posting.

Also, a week or two ago, someone posted a suite of interviews
with game developers, characterizing the gestalt as negative
for Voodoo3. I would argue that all of the developers acknowledged
that "fill-rate" was important and some said it was very important,
especially for complex 3d environments. Let me remind you that
Multiplayer with 4 opponents and 8 rockets in the air is a
complex 3d environment.

I would like to argue that Voodoo will win out again because of
speed. However, the Achilles heel is marketing. If everybody
thinks that the TNT is better, then everybody will buy it. Our
saving grace here may be banshee. If banshee gets widely
distributed, then the average gamer may have a Banshee and a
friend who has a TNT. They will compare the results and find
that Banshee is better for Quake II or Half-life or something.
This would then help them decide to buy and to tell their friends
to buy Voodoo3 when it comes out.

Still, I think faster will win out over "looks better" for now,
given a forced choice.

P.S. I have carefully benchmarked my K6 Voodoo1/Millenium system.
When I finally get my Wicked3D Banshee, I will benchmark it and
report the results. YEA. Just before I hit "Submit Response,"
my doorbell rang and it was UPS and it is HERE! More later.

Hey Chip, your PS was sent to Ballard, hope you don't mind.

"P.S. I now have multiplayer servers for Q2, SiN, Shogo and Half-Life running on my new SlicerWorld site. Just connect to 209.20.237.88 from any of those games. BTW, TDFX should be _running_ tons of game servers on the net - multiplayer is their biggest advantage now and they should do more to encourage it IMHO."
