BillyG, I wonder how things went in AZ ? Any first hand reports out there?
SFA wants to hook up all kinds of things, but no mention of Open Cable in this piece. No mention of the CableNet area? So what conjecture about the PC partner. Who wants to hook up all kinks of stuff?

Scientific-Atlanta and Avio Digital Put Explorer 2000 Digital Interactive Set-Top at the Center of Home Networking
Avio to Debut MediaWire Home Network Solution for Cable Operators at Scientific Atlanta's Booth #2345 at the 1998 Western Cable Show
SAN CARLOS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 1, 1998-- Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. (http://www.sciatl.com) and Avio Digital, Inc. (http://www.aviodigital.com) today announced plans to demonstrate the power of Scientific-Atlanta's digital network and the Explorer® 2000 digital interactive set-top box to put cable system operators at the center of the home networking revolution.
Leveraging Avio Digital's MediaWire(tm) home network technology and Scientific-Atlanta's digital interactive network, the Explorer 2000 set-top can be used to control digital video, audio, computer data services, telephony and home controls throughout the house.
A demonstration of home networking will take place in the Scientific-Atlanta booth (#2345) during the 1998 Western Cable Show to be held at the Anaheim Convention Center, December 2-4.
''It is becoming evident in the industry that within a few years we will have in-home networks linking all manner of digital devices in the home. The TV, phone, CD players, microwave ovens, heating system, digital printers, cameras and other devices will be hooked up to the system,'' said Dr. Allen Ecker, president of Scientific-Atlanta's Subscriber Network Sector. ''Scientific-Atlanta's digital interactive set-tops are the ideal focal point to allow in-home networks to connect to the outside world via the cable system.''
The Explorer 2000 digital interactive set-top is a unique entertainment and information device that allows consumers to interact with a broad range of new and existing services over their cable system. Using the high bandwidth of cable and the high performance processing power in the set-top, the Explorer 2000 is capable of delivering TV-based applications such as Internet access, instant video-on-demand, e-commerce and in-home networking.
Avio Digital's flagship technology, the MediaWire Home Network, is the most advanced solution for high-speed digital home networking, using ordinary residential telephone wiring to connect devices and distribute digital media and information.
The Western Cable show demonstration will showcase the capabilities of the MediaWire home network technology to effectively distribute audio, video and control signals from a single set-top box to any room in the house with no additional cable wiring. Avio will also demonstrate the MediaBox(tm), a digital audio and video recorder equipped with a MediaWire interface that can record and play back any type of data on the MediaWire home network.
''As consumers bring more and more digital devices into the home, they will want to easily connect the equipment and services together so they can be accessed from anywhere in the house,'' comments Don Burtis, president of Burtis Associates and acting vice president of technology, Avio Digital, Inc. ''Set-top boxes equipped with the MediaWire interface give the cable operators the ability to be right in the center of this network.''
'Future-proofed' network
Scientific-Atlanta's digital interactive network is based on an open architecture that allows for an infinite amount of applications and services to be added to the network without changes in network infrastructure. Additionally, Scientific-Atlanta's CreativEdgeTM Developers' Program enables third-party developers to create new applications for the Explorer 2000 platform using Scientific-Atlanta's freely available APIs, or application program interfaces.
Scientific-Atlanta has received purchase orders or commitments for its interactive digital network from 14 cable operators in the United States and Canada, representing more than 75 systems which have more than 16 million cable subscribers. These cable operators include Time Warner, TCI, Cox, Comcast, Adelphia, Marcus Cable, Rogers and Videotron.
An independent start-up based in San Carlos, CA, Avio Digital, Inc. is funded by seed investments from Vulcan Ventures Inc. and Interval Research Corp.; both are owned by investor Paul G. Allen.
