8/3/98 was the day when "the world" was told that Berkshire Hathaway had entirely "exited" their position in zero coupon bonds.

This was before the huge surge in bond prices a short while later.

If the acquisition of General Re by BRK.A was a way of replacing some or all of the bonds that had been sold in August, then maybe this is what you are talking about (?)

(I don't know what month the General Re thing happened).
