Christine,
I had wondered what the gospel of thomas was about because it is not in most bibles and is not in mine. It seems to me to be a distortion of some basic biblical truths so I would reject it as something that was not written by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. One test of any doctrine or scripture or interpretation of scripture is does it give Jesus Christ His rightful place as the incarnate Son of God. Also because it is not by works or any power of our own that we enter the kingdom of God then if these passages suggest that we can there is a contradiction. It is not by "works" but by faith alone that we enter into the kingdom of God. Ephesians 2:8-9, "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as the result of works, that no one should boast." All the glory for the salvation of souls goes to Jesus Christ and what He accomplished through His sacrifice on the cross. If the gospel of thomas suggests we can find the kingdom of God in ourselves by our own means then that is a false teaching. The fact that it leads the reader away from the need to be born again and receive God's Spirit to empower our own exposes the thomas gospel. It is contrary to well established principles of the Kingdom Of God as written by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit by the eye witnesses, the Apostles themselves. Jesus when He was here warned us that many false prophets and false teachers would arise and lead many astray. Paul also said some were (already) preaching a different Jesus (in his time). Paul said don't follow them and let them be accursed (the false teachers). The plan of the devil from the point when he realized what had happened when Jesus died on the cross and then Jesus rose again has been to steer as many as he can away from accepting Jesus, being born again. He has tailored many schemes and deceptions to that purpose. No doubt when the devil incited the political assassination of Jesus (using the Jewish ruling class who were afraid they were losing power and influence over the people) he thought that once dead Jesus would be his as everyone else was. he did not know until later that death would not be able to hold Jesus. the devil lost his tool, death, at that point. The only way to keep people dead now is to keep them away from Jesus and being born again. he weaves intricate deceptions to hide and deflect and obscure the truth. he gives as many as will believe a lie to believe in, another Jesus.

Christine,
The thing you object to the most seems to be being "born again". It's a leap of faith. It is very difficult for a rationalist. A doubter. But Jesus let "doubting" Thomas put his hand in His side and his finger in His holes in His hands and feet. Then Thomas believed. Jesus also let another doubting person do the same thing, so to speak. Me. I sincerely wanted to know the truth, and I asked God to reveal Himself to me. He did.
