NewSouth CLEC Gets $50 Million Funding

December 8, 1998

GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA, U.S.A.:
NewSouth Communications Corp., a
switch-based CLEC(competitive local
exchange carrier) has received a secured
funding commitment of $50 million from
Newcourt Capital. The move will allow the
CLEC to continue with its rollout in the South
Carolina region.

According to company officials, the secured
credit facility will be used to fund its capital
expenditures and working capital through
1999, and allow it to continue its switch
installation schedule as previously planned.

Michael L LaFrance the firm's president, said
that the commitment by allows NewSouth to
complete the initial phases of its market
build-out unabated.

The finding commitment is a positive sign
that private CLECs are able to secure enough
business to make them viable, Newsbytes
notes. The good news is that such CLECs are
now allowing telephone users in many areas
of the US to turn to alternative suppliers for
their local loop telephony services.

Newsbytes notes that NewSouth is a regional
CLEC that uses Lucent's AnyMedia
5ESS-2000 switches. The CLEC currently
offers services in Greenville, South Carolina
and Nashville, Tennessee, and is actively
expanding its network and installing
additional advanced digital switches to serve
new markets, including New Orleans, Orlando,
Tampa, Jacksonville, Atlanta, Charlotte, and
Ft. Lauderdale.

According to the firm, it plans to deploy
digital switches in all nine states in the
BellSouth region. The CLEC's Web site is at
