Compaq, Twinhead Most Popular Computer Brands in Taiwan
December 2, 1998 (TAIPEI) -- According to a survey conducted by the
Market Intelligence Center (MIC), the most popular PC brands in local
computer stores in October were Compaq for desktops and Twinhead for
notebooks, and Monopoly 4 remained the top-selling computer game.
MIC, which is under the auspices of the Institute for Information Industry, collects sales statistics from major computer stores and hypermarkets each month.

Compaq Computer Corp.'s Presario 5170 enjoyed 48 percent of the desktop
market in Taiwan, despite its relatively high price, as consumers appreciate its
speed and other features.

Twinhead International Corp.'s Figaro notebook PC enjoyed 46 percent of the
market for notebooks.

Twinhead's Figaro is equipped with a Pentium II 233/266 microprocessor, a
12.1-in. or 13.3-in. thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD), a 24X
CD-ROM drive and a 56kbps modem.

However, industry sources said its success is largely to its silver color, which
makes it stand out from competitors.

Asustek Computer Inc. remained the largest motherboard maker in Taiwan,
with a market share of 27 percent. Socket 7 motherboards remain the
mainstream units in Taiwan's market.

The Sampo brand has 35 percent and the Philips brand enjoys 24 percent of
the computer monitor market, and Hewlett-Packard Co., Epson Corp. and
Canon Inc. are the top-selling brands of printers.

Color ink-jet printers with prices less than NT$5,000 (US$154) are the most
popular models.

The 36x CD-ROM drive is the top-selling model due to its stability and speed.
DVD-ROM drives have not yet attracted much attention in the market.

Mustek Systems Inc. enjoys a 63 percent share of the scanner market, thanks
to its low prices and the loyalty of consumers to the brand.
