Cabletron Announces End-to-End Solution for Cable Modem Services; Offering Cable Companies Standards-Based Solutions Ensuring Interoperability December 2, 1998 08:08 AM ANAHEIM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 2, 1998--Addressing the needs of cable system operators that are deploying cable modem services to their customers, Cabletron Systems CS , today announced an end-to-end solution which enables Multiple System Operators (MSO) to share high-speed network access through cable with multiple users or devices. Cabletron's solution includes a Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) module for the award-winning SmartSwitch Router (SSR) 8000/8600, a family of cable routers for the home and enterprise, as well as superior network management applications for cable operators based on SPECTRUM. Best Performing Switch Router for Cable Headends Cable operators are faced with the need for ever increasing bandwidth, traffic prioritization and Quality of Service (QoS) as they look to deliver new services such as Internet access, Voice-over-IP and video-on-demand. The SSR offers an unparalleled ability to route or switch packets based on the application level information in Layer 4, or on the traditional source destination in Layer 3 - this is a key feature needed by a cable operator. Owning 33% market share in the Layer 3 chassis-based switching market and having been independently tested by such firms as the Tolly Group, Mier Communications and Harvard Laboratories, the SSR has proven to be the industry leader in the gigabit switch router space. It is no surprise that the SSR is the ideal backbone solution and is being implemented in cable headends across the country. Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) for the SSR Expanding the value of the SSR to cable headend operators, the CMTS module for the SSR 8000/8600 offers a unique one box solution that conserves precious space in the cable headend. Offering a four upstream and one downstream configuration, the SSR 8000/8600 CMTS module can terminate in excess of 30,000 DOCSIS cable modem sessions, making this the most scaleable system in the marketplace today. "Cable operators can now deploy cable modem services in a multivendor environment with acceptance of the DOCSIS 1.0 standard for interoperability," said Peter Rudnicky, Director of Broadband Products for Cabletron. "In addition to supplying MSOs solutions that support the DOCSIS standard, Cabletron is demonstrating its commitment to the cable industry by offering the highest performing products coupled with aggressive pricing." Cable Routers for the Home and the Enterprise With industry estimates of over 1 million cable modems already installed, there's a need to share the high-speed network access through cable with multiple users or devices. Available today, the SSR 245 offers a powerful, cost-effective solution for connecting a small-office LAN and workgroup networks to an Ethernet backbone and the Internet via a cable modem. Everyone on the LAN will have transparent, shared access to Internet services and wide area networking, saving access costs. The SSR 265, the newest model of the SSR 200 family of routers, will be a DOCSIS-compliant router with an integral cable modem and will offer the same robust TCP/IP routing functions as the SSR 245. Both products offer exceptional security features required by both enterprise and home users such as VPN (tunneling and encryption)and firewall; and QoS and Constant Bit Rate (CBR) through DOCSIS 1.1. SPECTRUM - The Cable Network Manager Network management services are rapidly becoming a critical issue for the cable industry. As the number of users and services grow, MSOs will be under increasing pressure to guarantee service availability at competitive prices. Service provisioning, device monitoring, fault capture isolation, backward compatibility with existing cable plant, and user-based accounting will be critical components of the MSO's ability to deliver profitable service to their customers. SPECTRUM manages and monitors a significant number of devices, ideal for an industry that controls millions of customer locations on a nationwide scale. With its modular design, ability to support proprietary management protocols, and Service Level Agreement (SLA) capabilities, SPECTRUM is the only network management system positioned for managing cable industry networks of all sizes. To enable the management of DOCSIS compliant devices, Cabletron with key MSOs is developing a DOCSIS management module to support the MIBs as specified by the DOCSIS OSSI specification. Through the DOCSIS management module, SPECTRUM will offer the cable industry an integrated platform on which to centralize system control, including multivendor support for CMTS, cable modem and Radio Frequency (RF) equipment. Pricing and Availability The CMTS module for the SSR 8000/8600 is priced at $14,995 and will be available in limited quantities for evaluation in Q1 '99 with volume shipments in Q2 '99. Available today, the SSR 245 is priced at $649; the SSR 265 will be available in Q2 '99.
