<<<Besides which, there is no such thing as support -- it's one of those pervasive TA myths>>>

I don't 100% agree. Fundamental analysis tells us what to buy. TA helps us with when to buy or sell. Nothing is 100% but TA is an important tool to an investor or a trader.

I'm not sure there is no such thing as "support". I would say there is support.
First: there is a look to a chart that shows that at a certain price, when a stock is receding, it tends not to go below that, and when a stock is advancing it tends to stall at a certain price (resistance).
Second: there is a psychological aspect to this: certain people are stubborn long term holders and some mutual funds are long term holders and at the price called "support" its very hard to shake those people loose. On the other hand, the "resistance" is where people just cant bear to pay that price for the stock.

Obviously the nonsense that went on last week with internet stocks shows that none of this applies when frenzy is going on.
