Netscape and 3Com Deliver Wireless Messaging for New Palm VII(TM)
Connected Organizer - PRNewswire, 01:45 p.m Dec 02, 1998 Eastern

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Netscape
Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: NSCP) today
announced that Netscape and 3Com are delivering wireless
Internet messaging service for the new 3Com(R) Palm VII(TM)
connected organizer. 3Com is using Netscape(R) Messaging
Server Hosting Edition software and Netscape(R) Directory
Server software to provide massively-scalable, Internet
standards-based messaging to the thousands of people expected
to use the new device. The two-way wireless messaging service
is scheduled to be available in an initial field trial early in 1999
with commercial availability later in 1999.

Activated by simply lifting the Palm VII antenna, the new
wireless messaging service, called iMESSENGER(TM),
enables two-way communication for users connecting to the
Internet in the Net Economy. When a user activates the service,
Netscape Directory Server automatically creates a new user
account in Netscape Messaging Server Hosting Edition with
addresses similar to john.doe@palm.net. Palm VII users can
chose from two levels of service: basic service with storage and
access of 50 kilobytes of data per month, or premium service
with 150 kilobytes per month.

"This new wireless Internet messaging service further enhances
the utility of the Palm VII by giving customers the ability to send
and receive messages from a hand-held device and stay
connected while traveling," said Mark Bercow, vice president of
strategic alliances and platform development at Palm
Computing, Inc., a 3Com Company. "Netscape's proven
messaging software provides the scalable messaging backbone
Palm needs to ensure quality service."

"Innovative companies such as 3Com are bringing to market
new services to create and keep customers and stay competitive
in the Net Economy," said Korak Mitra, vice president of
messaging at Netscape. "Netscape enterprise software helps
provide the scalable Internet infrastructure 3Com needs to
deliver next-generation, carrier-grade messaging service that is
massively-scalable and reliable to the millions of Palm users
today."

Five leading companies teamed with 3Com to deliver the new
wireless messaging service: BellSouth, Certicom, Lucent,
Netscape Communications and Portal Software. BellSouth is
supplying the wireless network to host the service, Certicom is
providing Elliptic Curve cryptography technology to encrypt the
wireless communications, Lucent is providing the DSP
technology, Netscape is proving the enterprise messaging and
directory software to run the service, and Portal is providing
software to manage subscribers and billing.

Netscape Messaging Server Hosting Edition leverages the
Internet Messaging Access Protocol (IMAP) to enable powerful
new features in the wireless messaging service such as server
folders and controlled download. Controlled download enables
users to receive messages 500 characters at a time and avoid
long download times. Users can then decide to download the
rest of the message, or subsequent segments, in 500 character
increments.

The announcement of wireless Internet Messaging for the Palm
VII organizer builds upon the strong integration between
Netscape software and the Palm Computing device. Other
Netscape products available for the Palm Computing platform
include Netscape(R) Directory synchronization software and
Netscape(R) Calendar Link for PalmPilot software, both
available with Netscape(R) Communicator client software.
Netscape(R) Directory synchronization software lets users store
a copy of their Internet address books in their Palm device.
Netscape(R) Calendar Link for PalmPilot software lets users
store an up-to-date copy of their Netscape(R) Calendar in the
Palm product.

Now available from Netscape, Netscape Messaging Server 4.0
Hosting Edition enables Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and
telecommunications companies (telcos) to provide scalable,
reliable messaging services to millions of users.

The new product is a central component in Netscape's
messaging strategy, focused on providing solutions for an
emerging new class of Enterprise Service Providers (ESPs) and
ISPs. The high-performance IMAP support in Netscape
Messaging Server Hosting Edition also serves as the
high-performance messaging backbone for value-added
messaging services such as unified messaging and Web-based
email.

Netscape Communicator, Netscape Messaging Server Hosting
Edition and Netscape Directory Servers are central components
of Netscape's Internet infrastructure, which provides a complete
services-ready solution for ESPs and ISPs competing in the Net
Economy where high performance, scalability, 24x7 reliability
and strong security features that extend outside the enterprise are
critical for success. Netscape Directory Server software
provides real-time directory and security services that enable
centralized, low cost management of the myriad of Internet
applications deployed by ESPs and ISVs.

Netscape Communications Corporation is a leading provider of
software and services for businesses that want to transform the

Erin,

You know you raise an interesting point about that. Perhaps not for this Pilot, which banners and the like would look horrid on, but perhaps for the color one there is a good chance for some advertising revenues.. of course these would be useful to help offset advertising costs (in COMS case). The other thing is, I don't know how many people would like the idea of having banners on a service that they pay for. We'll have to see how COMS plays this card...
