[STK] [IN] TRN [SU] PDT TO BUSINESS, NATIONAL AND TECHNOLOGY EDITORS: - PRNewswire, 01:48 p.m Dec 02, 1998 Eastern SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- UPS and 3Com Corp. have teamed up to put the latest high-tech shipping functionality at your fingertips. With the upcoming Palm VII(TM) connected organizer from Palm Computing, a 3Com company, users will have the ability to track the shipping status of everything from one-page documents to multi-package deliveries, as well as locate the nearest UPS service location from their car, the boardroom, or anywhere else. The announcement marks the first time a package delivery company has made shipping functionality available via a handheld computing platform device. According to Dale Hayes, UPS vice president of electronic commerce marketing, the new 3Com alliance extends UPS's e-commerce strategy to a critical segment of its customer base. "The Palm VII organizer will help customers integrate UPS business applications from the mailroom to the boardroom," Hayes said. "The result is a genuinely full-service solution that can help our customers at all levels of the organization monitor and manage important shipments of goods and information." "We're confident that UPS's shipping functionality will be an important feature that will attract a new class of customers to the Palm VII organizer," said Andrea Butter, acting vice president of marketing for Palm Computing. "We believe the ability to offer business-critical services and functions will help make hand-held computing a more useful information management tool for businesses of all sizes." The new Palm VII connected organizer, announced today at the Palm Computing Platform Worldwide Developer Conference, is the first handheld solution for out-of-the-box wireless communications and Internet access. In addition to providing fast and simple access to personal and business information, the Palm VII organizer enables users to quickly, easily and securely obtain information from Web sites via a wireless connection to the Internet and provides a means of instant two-way personal communications. The Palm VII organizer enters a national field trial in January 1999 and is expected to be widely available in the U.S. next year. UPS shipping features will be available on a CD ROM disk included with all Palm VII organizer purchases. Once the UPS software is downloaded, shipments can be tracked by simply clicking the UPS icon and entering the package tracking number. The Palm VII organizer displays status of the package, including the name of the party who received the delivery. The locator feature allows users to find the nearest UPS drop box, Letter Center, Authorized Shipping Outlet or UPS Customer Service Counter, regardless of the user's location. Users do not even need to provide the Palm VII organizer any information about their location, ZIP code or address -- it actually knows where the inquiry was originated.
