Another retailer about to go biometric . . .

According to a September 1998 report, Men's Wearhouse, a 400 store chain headquartered in Fremont, California, is auditioning vendors for finger scanning equipment for use by its store managers. The equipment will be tested out in 1999.

The idea is more to control employee function than for security, i.e., they want to make sure the manager -- and not some subordinate -- is doing the oversight functions on cash register returns, etc.

An analyst cited in this report said that retailers are going to be the next early adaptors, after financial institutions, since these scanners can be used during computer-assisted ordering of merchandise, and their audit functions can point out any need to train individuals whose store conduct is not following company policies.
