3Com offers Web access in new Palm
CBS MarketWatch - Last Update: 5:19 PM ET Dec 2, 1998

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (CBS.MW) -- Internet access seems to be the
driving force behind rising PC sales this holiday season and it will
now be featured in the latest version of 3Com's segment-leading
PalmPilot, the company said Wednesday.

3Com's (COMS) Palm Computing Inc. unit unveiled the Palm VII,
to provide Internet access for consumers and business people
in a wireless network accessible in 260 U.S. cities via BellSouth's
Intelligent Wireless Network.

The Palm VII will provide instant, two-way personal communication
in a text format offering flight schedules, news headlines and
online transactions such as movie ticket purchases or online stock
trades.
Content partners include ABCNews.com, ESPN.com, MasterCard,
Visa, The Wall Street Journal Interactive and Yahoo!

"The new Palm VII offers all the features, including PC
compatibility, of the older versions, with two major added
features -- access to the Web and two-way wireless messaging,"

Joe Sipher, director of wireless products for Palm Computing Inc. told
CBS.MarketWatch.com. "Yet it still achieves weeks of battery life."

The Palm VII organizer is scheduled to go on sale early
next year after a trial period at an expected price point at
$800 or less, he said.

Web clipping

With the Palm VII organizer, 3Com rolls out "web clipping,"
which extracts text from Web sites, eliminating power-draining
graphics and color.

Webmasters from 22 major sites have formatted content for the platform
including ABCNEWS.com, Bank of America, MapQuest, MasterCard,
Merriam-Webster, Moviefone, Travelocity, UPS, USA Today, and
U.S. West.

Palm.Net

For less than $10 per month, 3Com is offering Palm.Net to help
access the Internet and send and receive wireless Internet messages.

Subscribers to the Palm.Net service will be billed on their credit
cards on a monthly basis, starting at less than $10 per month.

Category growth

3Com leads the hand-held computer category, also known as personal
digital assistants (PDA) that hook up to desktop PCs.

The company's Palm III and its predecessor, the Palm Pilot, significantly
lead the market with more than two million users. The Palm operating
system, also used by IBM (IBM) in its WorkPad palm computer, is
challenged by Microsoft's (MSFT) Windows CE operating system. Windows
CE is designed for computers ranging in size from palm-size to the new
Jupiter-class large sub-notebook devices. Manufacturers such as Casio,
Philips and Uniden currently run Windows CE on their palm-top devices.

The Yankee Group estimates that there will be nearly seven
million wireless and mobile data subscribers by 1999, increasing
to more than 21 million by 2002.

"The Palm VII organizer is our first step in enabling a new class of information access and e-commerce solutions for the handheld computing
industry," Janice Roberts, senior vice president of 3Com and acting
president of Palm Computing said in a press release.

Shares of 3Com were unchanged at 42 7/8 on Wednesday.
