Both George Bush Sr. and Bob Dole were severely mauled by the right-wingers Pat Robertson and Pat Buchanan (the Republicans just love the Buchanan-types, don't they?) and were barely breathing by the time they came to the "finals"... In 1996, Buchanan might well have made it were it not for Forbes pumping money in Arizona to stop Buchanan's progress, which in turn, enabled Dole to squeak out. Today's Republican party is worse than what it was in '88, or '92 or even '96. Rabid right-wingers were mere spoilsports then, but now it is increasingly looking like you need to be one yourself, in order to entertain any hopes of getting the nomination.
