Chip-equipment rebound seen

(News from San Jose Mercury)

A recovery in the global semiconductor equipment and materials industry will begin in 1999, analysts and executives said Tuesday. More than 100 fund managers and institutional investors are meeting at the industry's annual Semicon Japan exposition, and many said the improved business will come some time between the first to third quarter of next year. It will be driven by a return to a balance in supply and demand in the chip markets, the increase in non-PC applications and fundamental changes in the way chips are manufactured, they said. [B930]
