GASOLINE: Fill-up is now a holdup

In some parts of the country, the tax on gasoline
now exceeds the cost of the product. That is a milestone.
There are not many products on the market - yet - where the consumer will pay more in taxes than the cost of the product.

The ordinary person might expect consumer ''watchdog'' organizations to be livid about this. So far, only silence.

Even worse, there are some who would argue that this is a perfect time to increase gasoline taxes, which conveniently are hidden in the pump price.

This would continue a trend since the early 1980s. Gasoline prices have been dropping. Gasoline taxes have been increasing.

Finally, the lines have been crossed.

Currently, federal taxes combined with the average state and local taxes now total nearly 43 cents. Gasoline in some parts of the country now costs less than that per gallon.

Suppose that the cost of a new computer, now approaching $500, carried a tax of more than $500? Would this be a sign of ''progress''?

Unfortunately, some would think so. (eom)

shust,

Thanks for the resp., thought you'd still be at least reading
in these parts.

Press here, at least the part I'm exposed to, has had little to
say about V elections at all. Perhaps it was just the Stratfor.com
spin I was thinking about.

Thanks for the local observations.

Holding (and slowly dying) my OFS guys, like yourself.
