Millicent Small E-Payment System to be Tested in Japan
by: hlpinout 44247 of 44253
December 3, 1998 (TOKYO) -- KDD Communications Inc., KDD Co.,
Ltd. and Compaq Computer KK will jointly test Compaq's MilliCent
electronic payment system for small financial transactions.
The tests are to start in February 1999. Japan's Ministry of International
Trade and Industry (MITI) has been appealing for companies to start this
type of experiment as part of its effort to promote the use of electronic
commerce in Japan.

Trials of the MilliCent system already are being conducted on a worldwide
scale, including in Japan, but this will be the first test to be done with the
system solely within Japan. The three companies involved are targeting the
year 2000 as the time when they hope the system will be ready for full
commercial operation.

MilliCent technology was originally developed by Digital Equipment Corp. of
the United States. Digital was acquired by Compaq. MilliCent's main feature
is that it makes it possible for settlements of transactions involving petty
amounts, between 0.1 cent and US$5, to be made over the Internet. That
makes it ideal for applications where customers will be able to download and
pay for small amounts of online data, such as individual images or pieces of
music.

In the spring of this year, MITI was given a budget of 42.5 billion yen
(US$347 million) to spend on electronic commerce projects as part of the
government's policy to revitalize the Japanese economy.

Since April, it has been collecting applications from companies involved in
electronic commerce that want to receive government support for their work.
So far, about 150 projects have been selected to benefit from the MITI
subsidy scheme, out of around 600 applications. The MilliCent field trial is
one of these.

From now until the start of the trial, the three companies will be looking for
content providers that would like to take part

Victor,re:"...co-ordinated cut". Perfect script for the spin-doc.
Lets hold off the 'cut' and 'pound on the problem' or vice-versa.

A down openning (the bigger the better) is good for the market,
I think that means bad news first this time.

Maybe it's SHOW-TIME/poker game again for the wall-streeters.
