From "helpinout":

Compaq to Keep DEC's Technology, Compaq Japan Pres. Says

December 3, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Hajime Takayanagi, president of Compaq
Computer K.K. of Japan, and other company executives stressed that
Compaq will retain the distinct technology of the former Digital Equipment Corp.

They made such comments in speeches given at a user conference called
"Compaq Q Forum" held Nov. 27 in Tokyo. The speakers stressed the
continued use of DEC technology to assure existing DEC customers.

The conference was held to explain to users Compaq's strategy after its acquisition of DEC. Takayanagi and various executives delivered their first speeches in the two months since the completion of the acquisition.

Takayanagi noted that Compaq has a strong relationship with Intel Corp. At the same time, he said that Compaq will make DEC's 64-bit Alpha RISC microprocessor a de facto standard in the 64-bit microprocessor market before Intel's "Merced" chip is introduced.

Also, Takayanagi said that Intel's chip will be geared toward the mass
market and the Alpha chip will be used for high-end systems.

Compaq vice president Makoto Baba (product management) also stressed
that Compaq will retain DEC's technology.

"We will invest 30 billion yen (US$245 million) in the coming year to
enhance and improve the Alpha microprocessor and Digital UNIX," Baba
said. Digital UNIX will be enhanced to become more compatible with
Windows NT and to support Merced as well, Baba noted.

And finally, for his last trick, "helpinout" presents:

Q3 Worldwide PC Server Shipments Rebound After Lackluster 2Q

infoseek.com ation%22,%22Compaq%22&sv=EL&lk=&col=NX&kt=A&ak=news1486

Sorry I can't seem to be able to get the whole link in highlighted. When I join up the word "corporation" half the link disappears - (quite a trick, "helpinout").

Perhaps a CPQ nerd could reformat and re-post.
