Elwood, at a glance, I didn't see this story re AV rumors posted. I think it's important to stay on top of this news, cause if rumors get squashed, seems it could easily fall back to the sub 35 range. sf ========================================= Rumors Resurface That Compaq Might Spin Off AltaVista Business Dow Jones Online News, Wednesday, December 02, 1998 at 20:16 NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Shares of Compaq Computer Corp., the world's top supplier of personal computers, rose 6.6% Wednesday on renewed talk that Compaq might spin off its AltaVista Internet business and optimism about holiday PC sales. AltaVista is the popular Internet search engine that Compaq acquired in its $9.1 billion purchase of Digital Equipment Corp. in June. Shortly after the purchase, some analysts questioned Compaq's interest in the search-engine business, but executives said they were committed to it. Several analysts said the rumor has been around for a while. A source close to the company said he had "no clue" where the rumor was coming from. AltaVista is one of the most broadly used programs for finding information on the Internet. Such queries generally raise no revenue for Compaq but AltaVista advertising and licensing agreements do. In October, Compaq revamped AltaVista with a simplified inquiry process and other features and said it was seeking more deals to lift AltaVista's Internet presence. "Just throw the word 'Internet' out there and that's good for 5%," said William Milton, an analyst at Brown Brothers Harriman. Compaq Chief Executive Officer Eckhard Pfieffer recently said AltaVista was one of the most attractive properties that came with the Digital acquisition. Given the the phenomenon of Internet portal companies, "we've been working on (AltaVista) since the acquisition," he said. "Obviously we haven't gone public with anything but we see tremendous potential there." Analysts noted that Hewlett-Packard Co. (HWP) talked up consumer PC sales in a meeting with analysts Tuesday. Those good vibes could have rubbed off on Compaq, the top PC manufacturer, they said. "It appears the consumer market is very strong," said Daniel Kunstler, an analyst at J.P. Morgan & Co. "H-P made some statements to that effect yesterday." Compaq (CPQ) was the second most actively traded stock on the Big Board Wednesday. Its shares rose $2.25 and closed at $36.56 on volume of 27.5 million, compared with average daily volume of 13.3 million. Copyright (c) 1998 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
