Computer hardware and software continue to be among the most popular items purchased via the Internet, according to the latest research. A report from Forrester Research, says American consumers will spend $665 million on software and $1.1 billion on hardware purchases online by the end of 1998. That's double the amount spent over the Net for computer products in 1997. According to a study of Internet demographics by Nielsen Media Research and CommerceNet , 4.4 million people bought computer hardware, and 4 million people purchased software in the first six months of 1998. These numbers represent an increase of 2.4 million people over 1997 in hardware purchases, and 1.2 million people over 1997 in software. Computer hardware and software are the most popular Internet purchases made by those 50 and older, according to the Nielsen/CommerceNet survey.

eMarketer has reported that combined online sales of computer hardware and software will reach $1.65 billion this year, in the same neighborhood as Forrester's figure.

Voltaire, if you consider how well EMC has done in information storage, and (1) MD stating that he feels Dell can capture double digits percent of the market in two years and (2) Dell's storage announcement next week... at least some positives are on the horizon
