Quantum sees that opportunity........Quantum demonstrates new
storage technology for consumer
electronics applications

Now what would SONY want to work on this for?<g>

MILPITAS, Calif.-Quantum Corp. is
conducting a demonstration of hard disk drive
storage for consumer electronics A/V
applications at the Western Show. In
cooperation with Sony
U.S. Research
Laboratories, the company is developing
storage technology that integrates the i.LINK
(IEEE-1394) interface with Quantum's hard
disk drives.

Quantum's A/V hard disk drive technology
incorporates direct isochronous recording that
allows the HDD to record and play back
digital video and audio as easily as a VCR;
dual streaming for simultaneous recording and
play back of video content; and plug-and-play
compatibility with other consumer A/V
devices across the i.LINK interface.

By direct connection to i.LINK compatible
consumer devices, Quantum's technology
enables the following capabilities in the home
entertainment center: instant replay of a scene;
pausing a live broadcast program; jumping to
a specific program or scene instantly; playing
one program while recording another; and
playing the beginning of a program that is still
recording.

I guess we can wait on voice over IP plays......

ANAHEIM-Three days of crammed exhibits
and sessions replaced what is historically a hot
show for news, perhaps showing that the
hardware environment is poised to hand off to
creative content providers.

This year's Western Show served up pockets
of news, with considerable momentum around
in-home networking solutions
and interactive
applications that run on advanced digital
set-tops.

The big hype machine? IP telephony, which
was exhibited all over the Show floor despite
open admissions by the vendor and MSO
communities that the category is years away.

ReplayTV from 6-26 hrs. of storage.
