DELL: DELL EMEA WINS FT WEBSITE OF THE YEAR AWARD (This just in)

Hi Kemble:

DEC 3, 1998, M2 Communications - Dell Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) part of the Dell Computer Corporation the world's leading direct computer systems company announced today that it has been awarded the 1998 FT Business Website of the Year award in the large organisation category at a ceremony in London last night. The other finalists were British Airways, Cellnet, BP Chemicals, Eastman Kodak, RS Components, Music Sales and DHL UK.

The aim of the FT awards is to share and promote the best business practice on the Web. The judges felt that Dell was the best example of a large organisation which demonstrated an impressive use of Internet technology to achieve commercial advantage against the yardsticks of business transformation, innovation and measurable financial benefit.

"Dell is continually looking at ways to improve our customers' experience while using the Internet and we are proud to be recognised for providing a website which is easy to navigate, adds value to our customers' businesses, and contributes substantially! to our company's growth," comments Gordon Ballantyne, Director of Dell Online, EMEA. "We are committed to building on our success and our goal is to generate 50 percent of our revenue via the Internet in less than 2 years."

Today 20 per cent of Dell's worldwide revenues come from the Internet making the company a leading player in the development of e-commerce. The third quarter financial results announced this November revealed that European Internet revenues had doubled to $2m a day over the previous quarter and that worldwide Internet revenue had reached $10m per day.

Dell's use of the Internet is an extension of its direct business model. Dell's entire business processes from procurement to service delivery are geared totally to enable a direct relationship with all customers. Dell's pioneering use of the Internet is a logical evolution of the model and more and more customers are turning to it as a convenient way to purchase its products and services. When Dell first launched direct Internet capabilities more than two years ago, customer sales through www.dell.com primarily were to individual consumers. Today, Dell's on-line business has expanded dramatically through sales and service to encompass primarily business and government customers.

The site has significantly enhanced e-service and technical support capabilities, with more than 1000 personalised web pages (Premier Pages) for large European customers, providing immediate online information specific to each customer. Business customers are able to purchase computers, track orders, create customised reports and view their Dell systems purchase and service history all online, thereby helping to reduce time and costs and increase productivity. Among other features, customers can access more than 50,000 pages of technical data, participate in a public discussion forum (Dell Talk), register online for hardware and software updates and use a variety of advanced diagnostic tools all available in 12 European languages.
