Z,
<<What would it take for disk drives to meet the shock requirements for use as CD replacements or supplements in an automobile? >>
Tip of iceberg. Arguing against DD use in uncontrolled environment-- temperature variance ( a drive would have to survive North Dakota in the winter and Texas in the summer-and survive rapid heating/cooling to driving temperature), humidity, shock, security concerns, dust, smoke, etc.
A possible alternative-a portable computer/appliance->automobile interface. A simple plug-in to an automobile's existing systems.

Ford has a techno-car of the future program. Interesting reading. Will try to find the link.
