Runner, many systems will start to fail this Jan 1 99 simply because they are looking a year ahead.

IMHO this is good for us all, because it will lessen the effect of a one off crash on 1/1/00, because many of the systems will already have been fixed or discarded.

One of the things we don't often see discussed is the fact that many systems within the average company are not crucial, and can be either ignored, or replaced with packages or with human ingenuity. Too often the assumption seems to be that because the computer system will fail, we will be like bunnies paralysed in the oncoming headlights. People have intelligence and use it when they need to. That will include working round missing non-essential systems with whatever it takes.

This is why I dont believe we will see the total disaster scenarios we see espoused(as in the Y2K weather report for example).
Obviously we are screwed if the utilities go down for several weeks, but even then, Canada is still here, after the ice blizzards of a few years ago. I can't speak for many of the utilities, but I know Telco and feel confident the ones I deal with will be ok, and as they are essentially a random sample, dont see why that shouldnt apply to the others.

Of course, you may read this in 18 months time and mock me as civilisation crashes, but then again, if that is the case, you wont be able to read this anyway :-)
