Thanks for that article Michael "Scoop" Piturro. What a classic--the head of the ITU says convergence, Ericcson says no!

Yesterday Dr Pekka Tarjanne, secretary-general of the International
Telecommunications Union, the global industry body which has the final say
on standards, said a compromise could be thrashed out by the end of
March.

"I am optimistic we can see convergence towards one global standard.
Some understanding has been shown of the need to have a framework," he
said.

New domain name registered by Qualcomm---www.pdqsmartphone.com

I know someone has seen a price on the Q800, but I wonder about availability. Ameritech here has started to put the dual mode StarTac in its ads for its Clearpath service. What about the Q800 and the Q1900--has anyone seen these phones actually commercially available? I have not seen them. We have good geographic coverage here--let's see if they are in the market.

MP and all -

I said it many times on this thread that:-

1. One of the main reasons that Sweden and probably THE main reason that Finland joined the EU was to protect ERICY and NOK.A respectively with all the muscle that the EU could bring to bear.

2. If they were to lose big on the IPR issue ERICY and NOK.A will just become box manufacturers so far as mobile phones are concerned and in that they cannot compete with the Far East. Since mobile phones are now such a big part of their respective businesses it effectively means that they would finished as companies in the major league.

3. If they were to lose big re the IPR with the Q taking 2. above into account their countries would be in Swedens case badlt injusred and in Finland's case they would lose about 25% of the countries exports overnight. The issue for these two countries is therefore one of the highest national priority and we can expect from them nothing short of their maximum effort to cajole and force and threaten and use every lever of the EU and their individual muscle over the smaller members to gain their votes all in oeder to defeat the Q.

This isn't a David and Goliath story its a David v. two Goliaths and a whole bunch of their nasty friends.

Go QCOM onward to victory.

regards,

L
