Mobil Corp. last week awarded Dell Computer a $75 million contract to replace 30,000 to 40,000 PCs, servers, and notebooks from several vendors over three years. By aligning itself with one computer vendor, Mobil expects to reduce the complexities of acquiring and managing systems, says Ardash Muradian, sourcing lead for vendor management at the oil company.

Dell's direct-sales model helped it win the contract, Muradian says. IBM and Hewlett-Packard also offered Mobil the option to buy direct under new programs they're instituting to expand companies' purchasing options. But Muradian says Dell had advantages the others lacked, including a build-to-order manufacturing process that lets the vendor drop system prices as soon as its suppliers reduce component costs. The deal should help Mobil save up to $6 million a year on systems, primarily due to volume discounts it will receive from Dell.
