DaveMG:

As Surfer Mike pointed out, it is tough to increase your market share when you are not suppling the phones to the street. The huge world wide increase in phone sales accounts for the decrease in percentage market share for Qualcomm. They are pumping out as many as they can, but they cant pump them out fast enough to satisfy the markets (both public and financial)

Market share is where it is at. Most people will buy their next phone from the same manufacturer as their current phone, unless they are unhappy with the current phone, or cant they cant get one. Sadly both cases seem to be true about Qualcomm.

I agree with Caxton, Qualcomm has squandered a big lead, one which they might not be able to overcome in the future.

Correct that the phone is not the deciding factor. See Yankee Group's
survey on US mobile habits.

It can be found at:
yankeegroup.com

and substantiates all you said with regard to selecting a service in the US.
