What is my position on abortion, brees? The back alley quote was a response to Ish, whose seems to favor something fairly close to an absolute ban. I.e. abortion for medical reasons only in the first trimester, a total ban after that.

There may be a middle ground on abortion, but the so-called PBA debate doesn't hold out much hope. My objection to the PBA law is not that I think abortion should be totally unrestricted, but that the law as written, and the debate around it, is not particularly honest. The line seems to be that the "PBA" procedure was invented to make sure the fetus is dead before it's completely "born", and I think that line is dishonest and inflammatory. And, we have the continued convolution of "health of mother" and "life of mother" as exceptions, as well as the total lack of exception for rape, incest, or fetal abnormality. Did you read the article I cited about the AMA endorsement of the law and the politics behind it?

Abortion is a hot button issue, and I'd agree a pointless one to argue in terms of changing people's minds. Nobody likes abortion in general, but an outright ban or near ban doesn't have sufficient political support, either. Some mainstream Republicans, William Kristol for example, seem to think it's a good issue to push as a centerpiece of the Republican moral reformation, he and others are welcome to make that case politically. It's not really an important issue to me, but I think the much maligned Women's movement has a right to fight back on the issue.
