Record date for the split is the day the transfer agent looks through the share log they have and send out the new split shares. This applies to registered shares only. Since most shares these days are in the "street name" and kept track of by electronic memo (rather than physical shares), the "effective date" of Jan 4 or 5th (I don't have the announcement handy) will be the day trading prices will be divided by 3 and your number of shares times 3. So, for all intents and purposes Jan 4 (or 5) is the ex-split date.

SuperD,
Iceshark is correct re the record date/ ex date. The last day the stock will trade at the pre-split price will be Jan 4. The split price will be reflected on Jan 5.
