It seems to work for Redhat. Just create a brand-identity and market to the people who wouldn't be comfortable downloading for free.

It saves you the hassle of how to divide the money among the programmers (because you don't have to). In fact, I'm sure most would be happy that you were getting wider distribution for their programs even if they were not paid.

Seems to me that you have very low capital requirements for entry, and with positive cash flow you can grow incrementally.

Granted, this scenario is only for people who think that a web-based marketing and distribution system would work in the real world. If you have doubts, it would probably be best to try to get VC funding and milk that until it's dry... thus eliminating any personal stake in it.
