Great leverage at ITXC and troubled introduction/marketing of Worldnet service.

Hi Tim, I recall in early '96 reading, and then posting some of Tom's words on a Compuserve thread I ran. His were the first words that resembled: "If anyone is going to cannibalize our services, it had better be us." Since then I've seen this numerous times by others in the field. He was referring to Voice over the Internet.

That was at a time when he was at T, in the WorldNet fold, and he was making noise about VoIP... or was it called IP Phone at that time [?], or VON [?]or something else [?], I don't recall. I think he may have just referred to it as Internet Phone. [ Later, during the below cited event, it had already picked up the moniker, VoIP. ]

But he did leave T, supposedly under amicable terms, and made the announcement during a Merklermedia Multimedia Event in Chicago during July of '97 to form ITXC. I tend to think that good standing remains between him and T, along with other contacts and brethren within Lucy. Relationships just don't go away that easily.
