I have not personally tested for the error, which purportedly appears in the latest version of the Microsoft JVM (described as the one included in the IE4 release; i.e. production code), but Java code claimed to exhibit it is presented in a comp.lang.java.advocacy thread entitled "Microsoft JVM, or how 2*1=4," with an initial posting date of 11/24/98 and available on DejaNews. A subsequent post in that same thread by the same author states that Microsoft has acknowledged the bug and intends to fix it in the next release.

I apologize if I've been sucked in and propagated a false criticism of Microsoft. On the other hand, I would like to know whether you have investigated the specific circumstances described in the thread and can say without doubt that they are erroneous.

JMHO.
