New 'Viagra drug' in RVH trials Impotence treatment pioneered Thursday, December 3 1998 By Claire McGahan Belfast Telegraph A NEW drug, which it is hoped will succeed impotence treatment breakthrough Viagra, is being pioneered in Belfast. The drug already being dubbed 'Son of Viagra' is currently on trial at the Royal Victoria Hospital. And it is hoped that although the side- effects of the original Viagra are few the new version will have even fewer side-effects again. Viagra was seen as a major breakthough in the treatment of impotence and has been in very high demand since becoming available on a prescription-only basis in Northern Ireland in September. Minor side-effects of Viagra can include flushing of the face and headaches in about 10% of patients. Today Dr Wallace Dinsmore, consultant physician at the Royal Group of Hospitals, said the new drug could prove even more successful that its predecessor. And although general availability could be years down the line, it was already being tested on impotent men in Belfast. "We have just finished a first trial of the new drug and a second is about to start," Dr Dinsmore said. "Although the side effects of the original Viagra are very minor, the new drug will be a much more selective one with fewer side- effects. "Belfast is one of the first centres to be involved in the tests. "Belfast was also the first centre in the UK to carry out multi-centre trials of Viagra in 1994, which led to the production licence in the US and more recently in September of this year in the UK."Impotence affects up to 10% of sexually active men in Northern Ireland. It is thought that up to 250,000 men here could be troubled with impotence at some stage in their lives. © Copyright Belfast Telegraph Newspapers Ltd.belfasttelegraph.co.uk
