Dennis, the main reason for today's strong performance is LU's upbeat presentation at the CSFB tech conference yesterday and today. The split rumor just adds to the exuberance. The following is from a Bloomberg report: Lucent's confidence and upbeat outlook may have helped relieve some investors' fears that demand for Lucent's products is slowing, analysts said. ''There's been some concern about the current quarter,'' said Paul Johnson, an analyst at BancBoston Robertson Stephens. ''The stock was set up kind of like of a tinder box to take off as soon as somebody said anything positive.''
