I've been in many focus groups over the years and a particular group discussing trends (social, retail, familial etc.)for close to 20 yrs. now. A friend in DC that works closely in this area thinks pressure will come to keep this huge group of humans working and consuming as long as possible to keep everything chugging along. This person, who should know, said the John Glenn space venture was just the opening round in changing the perception of what is old and what retirement should be.

The concept of retirement as we think of it only came about in the past 60 years or so. Prior to this time you worked until you died or were incapable of doing so. Retirement freed up jobs needed for groups of younger people. It may be a luxury that our government & society can not afford: not only from the Social Security standpoint but also from other income as well. These thoughts are always in my mind when I consider an investment. This is also why I went from interior design to bioremediation.

I used to keep one of your postings up on the board behind my computer, something about not giving your hard earned dollars to some company what can't make money itself...written in your Louisiana patois of course. (I think that is you) This is of course back when those drillers were making money and I was strictly a fundamentals girl. S.

Sharon, Thin Doc, LT, and thread:
The definitive answer about baby boomers and the market? According to Harry S. Dent, Jr. there is a correlation between the S&P500 and the number of 46 year olds in the population. Check out the graph by clicking the Harry Dent link at: 1800mutuals.com
I don't know what I think about that, there are also good correlations between the market and election years, super bowl champions, etc. (Did you notice that his S&P 500 index was adjusted for inflation?) But if he's right, we're gonna have to listen to LT officiously pontificate about the BK for 10 more years ;( Only a wee little correction is "allowed" between now and then <G>.
Did you also notice that AFTER the big LT we end up about where we are now (adjusted for inflation of course)? I think Mr. Dent would say it's just a wee bit early to be loading up on those put leaps. Guess we'll all just have to wait and wait and wait and see.
FWIW...Alski

PS. That "officiously pontificate" was completely tounge-in-cheek. It's a bit harsh, but I've been trying to find a way to use "officious" since I stumbled into it in the on-line dictionary-thesaurus at lightlink.com
No offence intended, LT. For those that are curious but don't want to look it up: officious - overly aggressive and forward in offering unwanted service or advice to others. Pontificate - to speak or behave with exaggerated authority.
