I thought everyone else just threw the Jury Duty notices in the trash. They don't come registered mail.

They use to have an "exemption from duty space" on the form for self-employed professionals, like doctors, but, in an amazing display of their intellectual prowess, did away with this option, and require a personal appearance for this exemption.

"Do the courts take into account the extreme financial burden they place on the self employed? "

No they dont and if they FORCED you to sit in the box, you would likely resent it a great deal, and your financial worries would gnaw at you, and you would not do a good job of administering justice.
