Quote of the day from a Japanese VAR talking about Compaq's direct model.

Jim:

An interesting perspective from a VAR a Japanese one at that as we know what the U.S VARs are saying already.Looks like Compaq succeeded in pissing off not only the American VARs but also the international ones,way to go I say.<g>
======================================================

..."We cannot accept any agent program from companies like Compaq that regard retailers as only brokers. Even if we manage to generate the same profit level, our sales will fall to a tenth, and in such a case, we will have to sell products of other makers," an official at a VAR said....

Hi Jim, re:

Ultimately, it [the cash for stock buybacks] comes from earnings just like dividends.

It may or may not be. It could be funded through debt. Or in the case of Dell and some other companies it could be funded partially through the sale of put options. But just like dividends, it is really a return of capital.

TTFN,
