Nokia, Microsoft see wireless Internet (Airtouch a partner) beating laptops in 2000
By Christine Harper / Bloomberg News

LONDON -- Bernard Vergnes, chairman of Microsoft Corp. in Europe, said he agreed with mobile phone-maker Nokia Oyj's prediction more mobile phones with Internet access than laptop computers will be sold in 2000.
"Everyone will have a portable telephone and they will access the Internet because it won't cost that much more money in a few years," Vergnes said in an interview at the FT World Telecommunications Conference.
Microsoft makes the basic operating software used in most personal computers, including laptops. It has formed a joint venture with U.S. mobile phone maker Qualcomm Inc. that has the backing of AT&T Corp., the U.S.'s largest long-distance phone company, and AirTouch Communications Inc., the world's largest mobile phone service provider, among others.
