I actually had the same thought (late last night, while I was brushing my teeth).

Unfortunately, I cannot remember the exact source of where I first heard this "tidbit" (interest received by individuals is greater than interest paid by individuals), but the various ideas that are occurring to us now were definitely within the "intellectual grasp" of the person who wrote the article (or, whatever it was).

I think the source was not I.R.S. data (which would definitely be pointless, since lack of deductibility of interest payments has been phased in for quite a while), but something like GDP flow of funds data.

Also, at least one of the times I read comments about this, it was from the economist Gary Shilling, who is (I think) a pretty smart guy.
